Life in PR: three months in

In this post, one of our recent grads, Selma provides some insight into what it’s like working at n2n and what she’s learnt so far…

After completing five years of an arduous law degree, pursuing a career in law was the last thing on my mind.  Evidently, the gruelling training was enough to put me off the quest for a legal career. Instead, I turned my attention to getting a job in the PR industry. To me, PR was a combination of everything I loved at university: written and verbal communication; thinking creatively to solve challenges; and working with incredibly creative and driven people.  The perfect recipe for a rewarding career.

I am now entering my third month at n2n and I must confess, it feels as though I’ve been here for a lot longer.  What I love most about working at n2n is how you can never predict how your day will unfold and what sort of work you’ll be doing. The days are never monotonous, and usually they slip past far too quickly. The bonus of working in an agency is the multitude of areas you get work across.  Thanks to the variety of our clients, there is never a moment to get bored or complacent.  Having great work mates helps too as they ensure you always take your work, but not yourself, seriously.

A typical day at n2n starts between 8 -8:30am. The first half hour of the day is dedicated to catching up on emails and news, as well as consuming some coffee!  The day is then split according to what work needs to be done in order of priority. Flexibility is a key strength in an agency as you have to multitask, change your daily planner and accept unexpected new tasks while still achieving your daily goals.

The most interesting aspect of my (short) career at n2n so far has been going to Queensland for an event with one of our clients. It was an opportunity to see the work I had been doing in action and spend time getting to know the client better.

If I could give any advice to those wanting to start a career in PR it would be this: don’t be afraid to seek opportunities, even if you don’t think you are qualified for them. I never thought a law degree would land me in a non-legal job I love so much. Be a sponge: absorb everything from those around you, ask plenty of questions and make sure you perform to a standard that makes you proud of your work. Above all, be flexible and have a sense of humour.
